Program Description

The Accelerated Massage Therapy Program is a three semester program designed for students with a kinesiology degree and a proficiency in musculoskeletal anatomy, biomechanics and rehabilitative exercises. This program will build upon their academic foundation, adding knowledge and skills pertaining to health sciences, clinical sciences, clinical practice, professional practice.

The complexity of massage techniques progresses from an introductory level to a highly skilled set of treatment skills. Ethics, legislation and practice management concepts are added and interwoven throughout the program, along with orthopedic assessment and rehabilitation skills. Students increasingly apply their skills in the student clinic and through patient outreach experiences.

Entrance Requirements

  1. University Kinesiology Degree
  2. Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Clearance
  3. Current Standard First Aid & CPR Level C
  4. English Language Proficiency

Application Process

  1. Complete the Request Info form on the College website www.ocht.ca
  2. Receive an email with a link to the program application and the course calendar.
  3. Submit the application.
  4. Send Kinesiology transcript and resume to Mary Ellen Logan, Director of Academics mel@ocht.ca
  5. Receive an email from the Massage Therapy Program Coordinator with information about the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) required for the Accelerated Program.
  6. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) will be completed based on submitted documentation. This may take up to 2 weeks. For possible outcomes, see below.
  7. You will be notified of the result of the PLA and will be invited to schedule a meeting with the Massage Therapy Program Coordinator. This meeting is an opportunity to see the college and learn about the program in great detail.
  8. Offer of Admission will be sent by email beginning November 1, 2023.

All accepted applicants are required to complete Musculoskeletal Anatomy Self-Study Modules prior to program start.

Prior Learning Assessment Outcomes

  1. Suitable candidate in all subject areas, offer of admission may be granted. (Musculoskeletal anatomy self-study modules required)
  2. Suitable candidate in most subject areas. Additional courses required for the subject area(s) in question. (Musculoskeletal anatomy self-study modules required)
  3. Suitable candidate, except degree completion was greater than 5 years prior. Entrance Exam required. (Musculoskeletal anatomy self-study modules required)
  4. Specific subject Challenge Exams may be required of candidates where details of prior learning are not available.

Policy on Refusing Admission

Meeting minimum academic admission requirements for any of the Massage Therapy Programs does not guarantee an offer of admission to the program. Applicants can be refused admission if the Director of Academics believes they do not stand a reasonable chance of completing the program or becoming registered with the CMTO. Reasons for refusal of admission based on this criteria include: poor academic achievement in high school or while attending another academic institution, based on transcript provided with the application, a display of immaturity or lack of professionalism at any time throughout the application process (meeting with massage therapy program coordinator, communication with front desk staff, communication with other massage therapy students etc.) or if they conduct themselves inappropriately or make comments considered derogatory or offensive to any student or staff member of OCHT.

Policy on English Language Proficiency

Applicants must be able to speak and write English with reasonable fluency. All activities (lectures, seminars, laboratories, etc.) at Ontario College of Health & Technology are conducted in English. It is essential that every student possess strong English writing, comprehension and speaking skills in order to be successful with the program curriculum and any other components of the program (student clinic and outreach). Our language fluency policy for admission to the program contains the same expectations as those of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario for registering for the Certification Examinations.

Decision Criteria

An applicant may meet the language fluency requirement by providing proof, acceptable to the college of one of the following:

  • An applicant’s first language is English.
  • An applicant has completed his/her secondary school education in English.*
  • An applicant has completed a post-secondary degree or diploma program in English
  • An applicant has completed a standardized English language test approved by the College within the past two years and achieved the required scores set by the College.
